The Science of Controlled Damage

Radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening relies on volumetric heating of the dermis to 40°C - 45°C. This denatures existing collagen fibers, triggering a wound-healing response (neocollagenesis).

However, exceeding 45°C risks thermal necrosis (cell death) and destruction of subcutaneous fat, leading to facial volume loss—a frequent complication with aggressive RF treatments.

WARNING: At-home RF devices often lack closed-loop temperature sensors. Prolonged stationary use can rapidly exceed thermal safety thresholds, causing localized fat atrophy.

Measured Depth of Penetration

Bipolar at-home devices (like the Tripollar Stop) generate heat superficially. While they can achieve 40°C at the epidermal surface, their penetration depth is limited compared to clinical monopolar RF (e.g., Thermage), resulting in temporary edema (swelling) rather than long-term structural remodeling.
